亲爱的同学们、家长们，
Dear students and parents,
我们正在一起经历
一个特殊的寒假
We are going through a special winter holiday together
我们有信心
克服眼前的困难
we are confident to overcome the difficulties in front of us
我们更怀着期待
在疫情结束以后
做的更好
And we are looking forward to doing better after the epidemic.

科技发展日新月异的时代
We are in an era of rapid development of science and technology.
因为科技，我们每个人的生活都发生了巨大的变化，很多我们现在习以为常的事物在不远的过去根本就不存在。
Thanks to technology,great changes have taken place in everyone's life.Many things we are used to now did not exist at all in the near past.

在2019年底，我国的高铁运营线路总长是35000公里，而在2008年8月之前，这个数字为零。
For example,by the end of 2019,the total length of China's high-speed rail lines was 35,000 kilometers,but before August 2008,the number was zero.

以智能手机为载体的移动互联网已经进入5G时代，而在2008年时我们还在2G时代，手机仅仅用来打电话，发短信。
Another example is communication,the mobile Internet with smart phones as the carrier has entered the 5G era,while in 2008 we were still in the 2G era,and mobile phones were only used for making calls and sending SMS then.
展望未来，会出现更多的新事物与新的生活方式，也会带来更多的挑战。
Looking forward to the future,there will be more new things and new ways of life,which will also bring more challenges.
比如便捷快速的交通，带来大范围、大流量的人员移动，这使得控制传染性疾病传播变得十分困难。
For instance,the fast and convenient transportation brings large-scale and large flow of people,which makes it very difficult to control the spread of infectious diseases.
再比如发达的通讯，传递了海量的信息，却把很多关键信息淹没在信息噪声里......
Another example is developed communication,which transmits a large amount of information,but submerges a lot of key information in information noise...
因此，我们更需要学习和培养基于观察、判断、决策和行动（OODA）的能力。
Therefore,we need to learn and develop the ability based on Observation,Orientation,Decision and Action(OODA).

We live in a world full of complex challenges,problems and interrelationships.
非洲的埃博拉病毒
中东的MERS病毒
看起来离我们很遥远，我们也很少去关注。
Ebola virus in Africa and MERS virus in the Middle East seem far away from us,and we seldom pay attention to them.
然而，当新型冠状病毒疫情爆发在我们身边时，我们才感受到未知病毒对现代社会的巨大挑战。
However,it is when the new coronavirus broke out around us that we felt the great challenge of the unknown virus to the modern society.
生命科学技术在不远的将来会大大延长人的预期寿命，大数据和人工智能会帮助人更好地预防各种疾病。
Life science and technology will greatly extend people's life expectancy in the near future.Big data and artificial intelligence will help people better prevent various diseases.
然而，在面对存在了上亿年之久的病毒，我们仍然手段有限。
However,in the face of viruses that have existed for hundreds of millions of years,we still have limited means.
初步证明对新型冠状病毒治疗有效，正在进行进一步临床试验的新药“瑞德西韦”，是为攻克埃博拉病毒而研发。
It has been preliminarily proved that the new drug"radcivir",which is undergoing further clinical trials,was developed to conquer the Ebola virus.
应对两种相距遥远的病毒、科技攻关与跨国合作，是不是印证了世界充满复杂挑战又相互联系呢？
To cope with two far-off viruses,don't scientific and technological research and transnational cooperation prove that the world is full of complex challenges and interconnected?
常有人问我，
什么是好的教育。
People often ask me what is a good education.
这会有很多
不同的答案
There will be many different answers
也不会只有
唯一的答案
and there won't be only one.
在几年前托马斯学校的创建伊始，我经常扪心自问：
At the beginning of the establishment of Thomas School a few years ago,I often asked myself:
教育的核心是人，好的教育就是如何成就人，那么托马斯学校要培养什么样的人？
The core of education is people.A good education is how to achieve people,so what kind of people does Thomas School want to cultivate?
为此，我写下过这样一段话：
Therefore,I wrote the following lines:
让每一位学生在面对充满挑战与问题的世界时，具备观察、分析、判断和解决问题的能力；知识、技能与人格能够和谐统一；
成为具有深厚中华文化底蕴、广阔国际视野，能在世界范围内积极行动的未来英才。
Let every student have the ability to observe,analyze,judge and solve problems in the face of a world full of challenges and problems;knowledge,skills and personality can be harmoniously unified.
Every student becomes a future elite with profound Chinese culture,broad international vision and positive action in the world.
现在看来，我们会坚持使命、积极行动来努力实现愿景。
Now it seems that we will stick to our mission and take positive actions to realize our vision.
当新的挑战与问题来临时，我们可以把准备做的更好，并贡献更多的专业智库和行动力量。
When new problems and challenges come,we can make better preparations and contribute more professional think tanks and action forces.

托马斯学校是把PBL－基于问题的学习、主动性学习和STEM/STEAM跨学科学习作为支架，以丰富的教学方法和手段来支持每一位学生的主动学习。
To achieve this goal,Thomas School takes PBL-problem-based learning,active learning and STEM/STEAM interdisciplinary learning as the medium,and supports each student's active learning with rich teaching methods and means.
同学们、家长们，此时此刻，我们正在紧张地部署托马斯学校的线上教学系统。
Students and parents,at this moment,we are intensely deploying the online teaching system of Thomas School.
这既是当前防疫形势使然，也是我们内心一直想做的一项教学方式改革实验。
Which is not only the result of the current epidemic prevention situation,but also an experiment of teaching method reform that we have always wanted to do in our heart.
同时也为即将建设的托马斯学校的国际学习社区作预备。
At the same time,we are preparing for building the international learning community of Thomas School.
从而让托马斯学校的科学与技术领域的教与学、实践和探索能够无边界、无国界。
So as to make teaching,learning,practice and exploration in the field of science and technology of Thomas School,borderless and universal.
也许在开始阶段，学校、教师、学生和家长都需要一个适应过程，会有这样那样的磨合，但我相信我们可以做好，并且在疫情结束之后可以做的更好。
Maybe at the beginning,schools,teachers,students and parents need a process of adaptation and mutual changes,but I believe we can do well,and do better after the epidemic.
让我们一起努力，共克时艰，共同成长！
Let's work together to tide over the difficulties and grow together!
